The Kiscelli Museum welcomes lovers of classical spaces in a wonderfully green setting, so you don’t have to travel far from the city center for a nature-inspired wedding.
The Kiscelli Museum and the park forest surrounding it form one of the capital’s most unique venues. Not only does it offer a fairytale backdrop for a wide range of weddings, but it also visibly carries the several-hundred-year-old history of Óbuda.
The museum’s story dates back to the 17th century, when Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor granted Óbuda to the Zichy family. Following the customs of the time, and after the expulsion of the Ottomans, Miklós Zichy set out on a pilgrimage. During his journey, he encountered the miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary in Mariazell. So taken was he by the statue that upon returning home, he commissioned a copy and built a chapel around it.
The so-called “Kismáriacell” chapel and the copy of the Virgin Mary statue became such a successful pilgrimage site that a few years later the building was expanded into a monastery, which was occupied by the vegetarian Trinitarian Order. As a ransom order devoted to redeeming captives, their mission largely ceased after the expulsion of the Turks. Thus, at the end of the 18th century, Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor — known as the “hat king” — dissolved the order with a single decree and had the monastery converted into a barracks. Part of the building became a military hospital, while the surrounding garden served as a site for military exercises.
Fortunately, by the 1890s this era had also come to an end, and the property was purchased by Austrian businessman Miksa Schmidt, who had moved to Budapest. As a furniture manufacturer with refined taste, he renovated the building in a castle style evoking classical times. Eventually, having no heirs, he bequeathed the entire estate — together with his full fortune — to the city of Budapest. After many hardships, the first exhibition finally opened in 1948, and from then on the museum gradually assumed the form we know today.

After such a story worthy of a novel, it is no wonder that upon arriving at the Kiscelli Museum, one feels as though they have left the city behind and stepped into a fairytale world filled with endless possibilities. With its baroque castle-like architecture, romantic park forest, and mystical former church hall, the venue creates a distinctive atmosphere on its own, yet pairs beautifully with a variety of wedding styles. It is therefore a dream location for every Budapest wedding planner and for lovers of unique celebrations.
As a returning organizer, I have helped bring countless fantastic weddings and events to life here, yet the wedding day of Fanni and Mark stands as one of the best examples of how classical and modern elements can complement each other beautifully.

On a radiant summer day, the couple celebrated their love surrounded by 150 guests. The elegance of the classically architectural venue was made truly personal and special by vibrant, tropical-inspired décor. In the courtyard that hosted the ceremony, striking installations of fuchsia, blush, and cream floral arrangements created a romantic yet vibrant atmosphere, while the gentle melodies of a jazz band filled the space with life. The intimate moments were accompanied by a harmonious interplay of music and color.
The reception took place in the museum’s former church hall, where palm leaves and bougainvillea flowers brought a tropical ambiance to the white marble and rustic brick walls. The exciting contrast between the historic surroundings and exotic details resulted in a unique yet refined overall effect.

During dinner, carefully designed lighting bathed the space in warm, friendly tones. As the evening progressed, the atmosphere gradually transformed into a lively club scene, with stage lighting and dynamic music taking center stage.
The celebration was made even more memorable by aerial acrobat performances, a surprise flash mob, and spectacular confetti bursts. Dancing until dawn and personalized keepsakes prepared for the guests further enhanced the experience, leaving it unforgettable for everyone in attendance.

Fanni and Mark’s wedding is a perfect example of how a historic venue can be combined with modern tropical elegance in a way that keeps the celebration stylish, liberated, and deeply personal all at once.
